Mr. Dan Carroll Sr., Board Member of DiCentral, Passes Away

Daniel Carroll, 81, passed away suddenly on November 19 at his home in Vail, CO where he had been a resident for the past 15 years.
Mr. Carroll, a distinguished businessman and adored mentor, was an early pioneer in the fields of management consulting, corporate executive leadership, and corporate governance. A 1947 graduate of Dartmouth College, he earned a master’s of art in political science from the University of Minnesota and completed several years of doctoral studies in social psychology at the University of Chicago. Mr. Carroll began his career as a management analyst for the Navy Department in 1950 before being asked to join Booz, Allen, & Hamilton by Jim Allen in 1954 where he was subsequently elected president of Booz, Allen’s management consulting division.
After Booz, Allen, Mr. Carroll served as president and chief operating officer of Gould, Inc. in Chicago before being appointed chief executive officer of Hoover Universal (which would later merge with Johnson Controls), both Fortune 500 companies. In 1982, he formed The Carroll Group, Inc., a management consulting firm with offices in Chicago and Ann Arbor, Michigan.
During his career Mr. Carroll served on more than 20 corporate boards of directors including Chicago-based Aon Corporation, the world’s largest insurance brokerage from 1980 to 2001.
“Dan was a very wise man who provided solid judgment and guidance to many CEOs over the years,” said Patrick G. Ryan, founder and executive chairman of Aon. “His integrity and sound thinking were of great benefit to Aon and other nationally recognized companies for many years.”
“Dan was a member of board of directors of DiCentral since 2003,” said Thuy Mai, Chairman and CEO of DiCentral, a software solutions company based in Houston. “Dan's contributions to DiCentral will reach far into its future. His dedication and vision guided DiCentral to become the successful and promising company it is today. He will be dearly missed."
From the early 1980s, Mr. Carroll served on many corporate boards of directors including Diebold, AM Castle, American Woodmark, Wolverine Worldwide, Michigan National Bank, and Oshkosh Truck, where he served as non-executive chairman of the board. He continued to serve on the boards of American Woodmark Corporation (Winchester,VA), the Flying Food Group (Chicago, IL), and DiCentral (Houston, TX), and the Gore Range Natural Sciences School in Vail until his death.
In addition to his many business accomplishments, Mr. Carroll believed strongly in education and was an enthusiastic supporter of academics as an overseer at Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, his alma mater, as well as a member of the board of visitors Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. He also served on the board of trustees of Case Western University and on President Johnson’s advisory board that created the White House Fellows program.
Mr. Carroll was also an accomplished writer whose articles were published in the Harvard Business Review and other leading management publications throughout the course of his career.
Between 1965 and 1977, he was chairman of the board of Bexley Hall, the Episcopal Seminary in Rochester, New York. He remained active in the national Episcopal Church and the University of Chicago Divinity School, where he was a member of the board of visitors, until his passing on November 19.
He is survived by his wife, Julie Carroll Noolan; his four children, Laura (Boston, MA), Lisa (San Diego, CA), Daniel (Chicago, IL), and Grant (Shrewsbury, NJ); eight grandchildren; and dozens of accomplished colleagues and executives who at some stage of their careers were nurtured by Mr. Carroll’s guiding presence.
